  • Deportatn*: 11 May 1841, England, as a result of being convicted in the Essex Assizes on 8 March 1841 for the crime of Housebreaking. • Criminal*: August 1855, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, ,

    Obtaining Goods under false Pretences.--

William Thurley was charged with obtaining on or
about the 1st instant, two quarts of beer, under false
pretences, and with intent to defraud Edward Brown
    of the New Town Road.

Mrs Brown, stated that she lived at the Queen's
Arms, on the New Town Road ; the prisoner
came there at the beginning "of the month, and
called for two pots of beer, for which he tendered a
note now produced ; witness asked him what he
meant by giving her such a thing as that, as she
saw the note was abad one.He said that a per-
son for whom he had been working, had given him
the note and a sovereign in payment : witness
then took tho note to her husband who was in the
parlour, and when she came back to the bar the
    , prisoner was gone.

Mr.E. Brown identified the note as the same
that had been brought to him by his wife, and
    which he handed over to Constable Morley ;
the day after the prisoner offered the note to Mrs
Brown, he caine to witness and asked him not to
pull" him ; he said he was very sorry for what
    he had done.

Mr Burgess asked Mr Brown how it was that he
had not brought the charge sooner against the prisoner.
Mr Brown replied, that the prisoner had been
working for him on a contract, and was indebted
to bira : he wished to get back his money, and
when the work waa finished, he caused the prisoner
    to be apprehended.

The bench censured Mr Brown for his conduct in
the matter, and in delivering judgment Mr Burgess
observed, that this was a case not merely
affecting the prosecutor but the public generally,
and he, Mr Brown, ought to have proceeded in a
different manner : ths Bench were satisfied with
the guilt of the prisoner, but not with the manner
the case had been managed ; they would, therefore,
give the prisoner the benefit of that irregularity,
and sentence him only to three months imprison-
    ment with hard labour.
  • Death*: 19 August 1864, Hobart General Hospital, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, Cause of death was listed as "softening of the brain". His death reference number on the Tasmanian Pioneer Index was listed as "35/4630".
