According to Brian Leighton: 'We 'think' that what probably happened was Alexander came home on leave from the Great War and not knowing if he would survive, they 'conceived Robert Edward. He then went back to the War and Mabel found she was with child. She sent him the famou s 'soldiers lament' of CHIPS (Come Home Quick I'm Pregnant) but he did not get back to England until February 1915, by which time his son Robert was a month old. They got married in February and Doris was born in the November of that year'!
